The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Chereponi Constituency has issued a strong statement condemning what it describes as the “poorly handled” relocation of traders from the Chereponi market by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Amadu Kofi Sheini, and the District Assembly.
In a press release signed by Constituency Secretary Munturi Kofi Ben, the party expressed “utmost disappointment and concern” over the manner in which the relocation process for the proposed 24-hour market has been managed.
Key Concerns Raised
The NPP highlighted several grievances:
- Failure of Stakeholder Engagement: The party accused the DCE and MP of neglecting to consult market women and other stakeholders before issuing directives.
- Absence of Relocation Plan: Traders were reportedly given only three days’ notice to vacate without any prepared alternative site.
- No Compensation Framework: The release criticized the lack of a clear plan to compensate traders whose stalls and stores face demolition.
- Threat to Livelihoods: The abrupt eviction, according to the NPP, jeopardizes the survival of families who rely solely on market activities.
“Projects intended to improve lives must not instead worsen them through poor planning and disregard for those directly affected,” the statement read.
Call to Action
The NPP Chereponi Constituency has demanded that the District Assembly:
- Halt demolition activities immediately.
- Engage affected stakeholders in transparent dialogue.
- Secure and prepare a suitable relocation site.
- Develop and communicate a fair compensation package.
The party warned that failure to address these concerns would deepen public dissatisfaction and erode trust in local leadership.
Conclusion
The press release emphasized that “the people of Chereponi deserve better” and called for leadership that listens, plans, and acts with compassion and fairness.
